TEXT TO BE READ FOR THE BLIND – WRITERS OF MONDOÑEDO

Course Overview:

Since his birth, Álvaro Cunqueiro spent his early years in an environment that constantly breathed literature. Both his family circle and the visitors to his father’s apothecary were as important as the city’s literary atmosphere, which developed around the Seminary of Santa Catalina, making Mondoñedo a space for culture and literature that in all of Galicia was only surpassed by Santiago.

Other writers born in Mondoñedo are Noriega Varela, Leiras Pulpeiro and Lence Santar. Writers who studied at the Seminary were Díaz Castro, Aquilino Iglesia Alvariño, Crecente Vega and an endless list of names.

Cunqueiro developed his great literary talent in the midst of an atmosphere that never ceased to inspire him and with the impulse of the friendships he made with others of his generation, such as Xosé Díaz Jácome, or the journalist Eduardo Lence Santar (to cite only two as an example) and with the high density of literary essence that pervaded his hometown.

In recent years Mondoñedo has also seen the rise of a generation of literary figures from a long list that includes Luis Enrique Cabanela, Xe Freire, Marina Mayoral, Antón Meilán, Isabel Morán, Francisco Piñeiro, Antonio Reigosa, Armando Requeixo, Xosé Ruiz Leivas, or César Cunqueiro, one of the sons of Álvaro Cunqueiro.
